This
is a vigorous hike that will take you over a variety of terrain including
grassy paths, old logging roads and unimproved town roadways. This will
test your hiking stamina and give you a great hike.
Beginning
at Beech Mountain Parkway Trail head you will follow Smoketree Trail until
it connects with Red Fox/Arrowhead Trail at
Pinnacle Ridge Road. Follow the red arrows along this trail. You have not hiked 2 miles.
From
here you will follow Red Fox down to its intersection with Grassy Gap
Trail, which turn left left into the woods, you will be hiking beside the
creek at times. Shortly, you will reach the lower trailhead of Grassy Gap
Trail. At Grassy Gap Creek Road, near the water treatment plant driveway,
you will have hiked 4.5 miles. To continue, follow toward Buckeye Lake.
Shortly, turn left on Deergrass out to Pinnacle Ridge Road, a distance of
6/10 of a mile.
A vigorous uphill hike
that would allow you to return to your starting point, you can hike up
Pinnacle Ridge Road to Woodland Road where it intersects with Smoketree
trail returning to the trailhead at Beech Mountain Parkway.
